Firefighting Mobility Experience with Střední průmyslová škola Hranice
From the heart of the Czech Republic to the operational zones of Thessaloniki, we had the honor to host students and educators from Střední průmyslová škola Hranice (SPŠ Hranice) as part of the Erasmus+ program 2024-1-CZ01-KA121-VET-000200499, for a two-week vocational experience focused on firefighting and forest protection services.
Key Educational Activities and Institutional Visits
The program was designed to offer real insight into modern emergency response operations, civil protection systems, and environmental responsibility through structured visits, hands-on sessions, and collaboration with Greek institutions.
- 4th Firefighting & Port Station of Thessaloniki
Students were introduced to the structure and function of a modern fire department within a port environment. They observed emergency protocols, equipment demonstrations, and discussed the challenges of maritime fire incidents.
- 1st Firefighting & Port Station of Thessaloniki
The visit offered a complementary perspective on coordination between land-based and maritime rescue services. Students engaged in discussions with experienced officers on real-case scenarios and prevention strategies.
- Special Unit for Forest Fire Intervention (ΕΜΟΔΕ) – Thessaloniki
In the context of increasing environmental threats, this visit helped students understand the structure and action of specialized rapid-response forest firefighting teams. They were able to see the Canadair aircraft up close — iconic tools in aerial firefighting — and speak with professionals operating in extreme conditions.
- Directorate of Forests – Thessaloniki
Focusing on fire prevention and environmental protection, students learned about forest management, risk zones, and cooperation between forestry services and fire departments in Greece. This visit emphasized the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration.
From Theory to Practice – A Holistic Experience
Throughout the two-week mobility, the participants developed both technical and soft skills:
- Gained hands-on exposure to emergency service operations.
- Interacted directly with experienced professionals.
- Understood the importance of international cooperation in public safety.
- Strengthened their sense of responsibility, adaptability, and team spirit.
The presence of dedicated firefighting teachers and the active participation of students created a dynamic learning environment. A symbolic moment was the group photo in front of the Canadair aircraft — not just as a memory, but as a reminder of their future role in protecting lives and nature.
